Holidaying in Pet Friendly Hotels

When you buy a pet, you are making it a part of your life, for the rest of its life.  It can be hard to leave a pet behind when you go on vacation.  Leaving a pet in a kennel or at your own home while you are on holiday is not really an option for many people, who cannot bear to be parted from their animals for a prolonged period of time.

Taking Your Pets With You

Taking our pets with us may sound like a big deal to some but when your pet is just a small turtle or a fish, you can actually smuggle it in the hotel and no one would be the wiser. These are not high maintenance pets that need walks or litter boxes. The smaller pets are not a much a problem to bring along during vacations as the bigger ones. Dogs and cats are more difficult to hide than the smaller lizards or rats that we may have as pets.

Pet friendly hotels are increasingly common.  Many pet web sites offer listings of pet friendly hotels across the country, and there are a lot of travel agents that can help you out too.  Remember to check the rules before you visit, though – certain hotels will accommodate the pet in a kennel separate from your room.  Others will allow smaller cats and dogs to come in to the room with you.

A good pet friendly hotel will want to know about your pet before you visit – they may have different rules for different sized animals – they may also be concerned about the temperament and training of your pet.  It is preferred if your pet is house trained and well socialized before you bring it to a hotel with you.

Often fish and birds are welcome in pet friendly hotels – if you tell the hotel in advance they will be happy to sort out anything extra you may require, such as a perch or a cat stand.  They may even be able to help with special arrangements for more exotic pets.

You may find that the hotel offers extra services such as special meals for pets, or a dog walking service / pet sitting service for times when you are visiting museums or other attractions in the area that do not allow pets inside.

This is quite a revelation to me, I had no idea that people would want to take birds, fish or cats on holiday with them but I guess thye are part of the extended family and some people couldn't bear to be parted. Our dog goes to kennels when we go away although both we and Sham are not to keen on, but the holiday is for us humans to re-charge our batteries
